The Cranleigh Boutique

Most Lake District hotels are grand houses at the end of a long drive, which is lovely until you want dinner and discover the nearest anything is a fifteen-minute drive back down it. The Cranleigh is the other kind. We are an adults-only boutique hotel in Bowness-on-Windermere, three separate properties within one village, and everything you came for is on foot from the door. Selected suites have private outdoor hot tubs and deep spa baths, and every stay includes access to spa facilities and treatments. Park once on Friday and leave the car alone until Sunday. From £197 a night.

SAID PLAINLY

We are not a hotel on Lake Windermere, and that is deliberate

Let us deal with this honestly, because most luxury hotels in the Lake District will not. We do not sit on the shore, and we do not sell you a lake view we do not have. We are a short walk from Lake Windermere, in the middle of Bowness, and we chose that on purpose.

Here is the trade nobody explains when you are comparing hotels in the Lake District. A hotel on the water buys you a view from the window and costs you everything else, because dinner, a drink, a walk into town and the boat all become a drive. Being in the village inverts that entirely. You get the lake in four minutes on foot whenever you actually want it, and you get a village the rest of the time. The view is the thing people photograph. The walk is the thing they remember.

The view is the thing people photograph.
The walk is the thing they remember.

the bit nobody explains

Windermere hotels, Bowness hotels, and which one you actually want

The names confuse practically everybody, so here is the short version. Windermere is a town, roughly a mile inland. Bowness-on-Windermere is the village on the shore. Lake Windermere is the water itself.

Search hotels in Lake District Windermere, or hotels in the Lakes, Windermere included, or lake district Windermere hotels, and you will receive substantially the same list, because Lake District, Lake Windermere, hotels and villages are filed interchangeably under all three names.

The distinction matters more than the search engines suggest. A hotel in Windermere, Lake District, sits a mile from the water, which is a genuine walk with luggage or a genuinely irritating drive. Of the hotels Lake Windermere is comfortably walkable from, most are in Bowness, and we are among them. So if you are comparing Windermere hotels and wondering why the prices and the photographs look interchangeable, the difference is rarely the bedroom. It is the address, and consequently the amount of driving your weekend quietly requires.

Search hotels lake district and you will meet the same shortlist repeatedly: enormous country houses, largely wonderful, largely remote, and largely designed for a different kind of weekend altogether. They are magnificent for a week with a car and an itinerary. They become hard work across two nights, because everything you actually want is situated somewhere else, and somebody has to volunteer to drive to it. Guest houses solve the geography and surrender the design; the country estates reverse the compromise exactly. We are attempting neither.

What luxury actually means here

Luxury stays in the Lake District are mostly sold on scale: the acreage, the ballroom, the length of the drive. We have none of that and we do not want it. Our version of luxury is smaller and considerably more specific.

Private outdoor hot tubs in selected suites, deep spa baths indoors in others. King size and super king beds. Mood lighting you can genuinely control. Cinema screens. Mini-bars and champagne waiting rather than requested, and arrival cocktails poured before your luggage has reached the room. Access to spa facilities and treatments, arranged by us before you arrive, so that no part of the weekend requires a telephone call from you.

That is what luxury places to stay in the Lake District ought to mean at this size: nothing to organise, nothing to ask for twice, nothing you have to drive to. Among luxury hotels in the Lake District, UK visitors are almost invariably offered scale. We would rather offer subtraction. We are a luxury hotel in the Lake District by intent, not by acreage.

THE MAIN HOTEL

The main hotel, with rooms and suites, breakfast downstairs, and hosts who are within reach when you want them and invisible when you do not.

Noticeably more space and privacy, in a converted church, which matters when the occasion has a name attached. Anniversaries, proposals and significant birthdays tend to arrive here.

THE HIDEOUT BOUTIQUE HOUSE

Self-catering, and it suits couples who would rather have an entire building than a single room within one. It is also the sensible answer when two couples travel together.

A WHOLE HOUSE, NOT A ROOM

Between the three, we can house almost any version of a Lake District weekend without you ever changing village.

What is genuinely outside the door

This is the part that a hotel on the lake cannot offer, and it is why the address matters more than the view.

Bowness-on-Windermere is a two-minute walk. The lake itself, and the boats across it, are four. The World of Beatrix Potter sits in the village. The fells begin at the edge of it. Exploring the lake, on a boat or on foot, requires nothing more than deciding to.

Dinner is equally settled. Our guest app carries a discount at our sister venues in the village, The Fizzy Tarté and BAHA, both of which become adults-only in the evening. So the drink before, the meal itself and the walk home are already arranged, and none of it involves finding the car keys. Our hotel offers and packages are built around the same principle: the occasion handled before you arrive, rather than improvised at reception.

Who this is for, and who it is honestly not for

Yes, if:

  • You want everything within walking distance

  • You want a private hot tub or a deep spa bath, not a shared spa timetable

  • You want a village to explore, not just a hotel to sit in

  • You are celebrating something and do not want children in the frame

No, if:

  • You are travelling with children

  • You want a lake view from your window over a village at your door

  • You want acres of grounds and a long private drive

  • You are looking for afternoon tea, log fires, or a spa timetable with a queue

    “Beautiful personalised birthday package”

Just returned from a weekend here and cannot fault a thing. The room was amazing, beautiful personalised birthday package in my room upon arrival. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was delicious. Would definitely recommend and will be returning. Thank you.

    “A wonderful stay!”

We stayed for a last minute 1 night break at the Hideout Boutique House for a surprise for my partner! It was absolutely beautiful, everything was perfect.

The hideout house is self-catered and located in the centre of Bowness. 3 floors of pure bliss, the house is decorated beautifully! The ground floor was the cherry on the top, a super-sized bath, open shower, a bar, with lovely mood lighting all over, looking onto hidden tv screens.
